Holy cow I love this car. Incredibly underrated. The torque steer is kind of nuts on these old turbo Mazdas, but they’re so much fun. And it’s brown. And a stick. And it has the oscillating vents. And look at that interior. Must resist.

I was looking hard for a good one of these a few months ago, but then went in another direction. Now I’m thinking I might be back in the market.

I dunno, I feel like I could get this guy running for less than a hundred bucks, and I could probably negotiate him down a bit lower

Oscillating vents? The cabin vents rotate?
Some of these have dual b-pillar and flippy lights. The want, oh lord the want.
Oh golly the awesomes

And...and they came with a turbo rotary if memory serves....
Actually, yours is a 626, this is a 929/Cosmo. How many big coupes can Mazda make? Awesome regardless.

The slats would swing.
Those quad flip up headlights are truly epic as is that interior.
I really dig those Mazdas from that era. My favorite variation is the 626 5-door which also came in GT turbo form.

Adjustable shocks FTW!!! And that brown interior is truly epic, nice seats. I’m pretty sure we never got that Turbo over here. Are you sorry about getting that 100NX now?

My grandfather for sure, not my grandmother although she says she’s always wanted to...unfortunately I’m not in too close contact with them otherwise that might be more plausible... :(

I know, they thought of everything with this car. Adjustable suspension, those moving air vents, the freaking wheels. I love my NX, but if this had been for sale then, I would have bought this. I do really like these cars. And the brown inside and out makes my heart melt. The turbo has that fun 80’s lag and when it kicks in, these things really fly. And they try to rip the steering wheel out of your hands. It’s an absolute blast. My real favorite, though, is the 5-door hatchback version. It’s like a Japanese Saab.

I understand totally. A friend of my brother had a Japanese Turbo’d sedan when I was 16.
Even older, I think it was an ‘82. Turbo lag and torque-steer all over the place. Only available in black or white IIRC.
It just didn’t look good, back then at least. Nowadays I do find it looks awesome.

That is a sweet little car. I wasn’t a fan of them at the time, either, but I’ve really come to appreciate them now. Great use of speed tech in small, economical packages. They were inspired by Europeans, but managed to make cars that were cheap and reliable in that typical Japanese fashion. What I like about those Mazdas is how they added just a dash of class.

Quite indeed: Mazda added class, Honda added technological refinement. When I just got my driver’s license I drove a lot in the 5th gen Civic with it’s 130hp D16Z9. That was one wicked car. Never understand why it was that short lived: only 4 years! I’m a Honda man. But the 1st gen MX5 is one of the best buys a man can do nowadays!

I had an Acura Integra after I graduated high school. That was really good car for the time. I think that’s the only modern Honda I’ve had. I was young and treated it poorly and it withstood everything. Yeah, that Civic was pretty great. My niece actually had one. I think it was the last cool Civic until the newest one. And the MX-5 is definitely deserving of its status. If you’ve ever driven one, you can’t hate it. Just about perfect for it’s trying to pull off. It’s getting hard to find a nice one, though, so there’s a premium for unmolested ones.

An Acura Integra Type-R? God those were amazing. White I presume?
That ‘ESI’ (with it’s 130hp 1.6) truly was great. I could only imagine how that VTI (with it’s 160hp VTEC engine) would have been. I wasn’t really experienced back then of course but I could tell it gave one pleasure. And speed.
The MX5 is the same: you could beat it and it probably still would run after 300k miles. And it’s weight and RWD make it pretty joyful. I only drove the 1st gen and the 3rd gen but the 1st gen is the one I remember and that probably says it all...

It was not a type R, no. I was just a teenager and didn’t know any better. I’m not even sure the R was available here, yet, at that time. Still a great car, though.
Yeah, I’ve only driven the first gen MX and it sure was fun. I don’t know how you’d improve on it, really. I guess it could use more horsepower if you’re into that, but it seemed powerful enough to me for what it was and how it was meant to be driven.
Jobjoris

08/23/2015 at 12:23 | 1 |
The Type-R was the only one we got at first! Only available in white, red or black. Or maybe that very first in white only!
There were those Monster Miata-conversions putting in a Ford 5.0 V8. Ton Roks, the guy I know with that car magazine told me that one was nuts. All balance of the car was gone. Hard to beat on a straight though.

That’s interesting you only got the R. A pretty good introduction to that car. Mine was a ‘91 second gen and it looks like we first got the R in ‘92, so I just missed. They’re quite rare here. They didn’t import very many so they’re quite valuable now.
Yeah, a V8 would definitely put the Miata out of whack. You’d have to out some cement in the trunk to balance it out.

Well, actually we received that first gen 5-door AV-series halfway the ‘80’s. And then for a while there was no Integra. Until, in 1993, Honda took it’s 3rd gen little coupé type-R in white and surprised us with that screaming (over 8k rpm!!!!) white pocket rocket.
Haha, there we go again: the story of my friend’s Renault R18 with it’s cement floor in the back!!!
Jonee

That 5-door was pretty popular here, but it wasn’t a particularly interesting car mechanically. You still see the third gen ones all over the place. Very popular among the Japanese car crowd. They are so many of them, they’re fairly cheap, I guess.
They used to put bags of cement in the back of AMC Gremlins in the dealership back in the day to make them look right. Since they cut the trunk off a Hornet to make it, there was no weight back there to make it sit down. Also helped with traction, obviously. The ones with a V8 would spin and spin the tires.

Spinning and spinning was what my F150 tended to do all the time as well, especially in the wet. That car truly had no electronic aids. A speed delimiter, that’s it.

Well, you’re supposed to have a bunch in the gravel in the back and be towing a boat. Of course, almost no one in America does that with their truck, but they could if they wanted to. What year was it again?

And getting it in Silver was a wise decision as well. In black it’s way too ‘bad-ass’, agressive. There are few cars I would get in silver.

I don’t go for silver, either, especially on new cars. But, I’m always surprised at how many older cars I actually do like in silver. Like, this looks sharp.
Jobjoris

Certainly does, but for a French car I’d prefer blue. Always. Or is this the Mexican ?
Old Porsches/Mercedi are great in Silver. But once in a while an Italian comes along and proves me wrong for keeping Silver for the Teutonic ones.
Jonee

08/26/2015 at 04:25 | 1 |
That is a Mexican Dinalpin so it doesn’t have to be blue.
Ah, yeah, that Bertone looks great in silver. It’s interesting that both BMW and Honda kind of took aspects of that car.

Well, once in a while I just have to watch the Bertone 250 GT SWB as it’s one of the best looking cars ever. Even in silver. Which actually is the best color for it I suppose. It needs yellow lenses though.

How many were built? I’ve only seen the silver and blue. That’s one car that might not work in orange.

08/26/2015 at 16:23 | 1 |
I think 2 were built. One was for Nuccio him self. You’r totally right about that orange, I don’t even think red would suit it.
Jonee

Red might be a bit much, but it could work with that swoop. The silver one is nicer than the blue one. It needs a dignified color.

Red could only work if it’s that old Ferrari-rosso (‘Mugello’ recently). Like with this mother of all Barchettas:

Looks like it’s “ utslipp ” which is Norwegian for “emissions.” So, I think it’s electric and it’s saying “0 Emissions.”

Nice explanation. Norwegian seems pretty alike to Dutch, we call it “Uitstoot”.

Oh yeah. I didn’t even notice the suicide doors. That’s old school microcar.
I’m not positive it’s the same Maranello, but it is Italian although their website is no more, so it’s probably not in production any more.
Interesting. I wonder if the English word “soot” is related somehow.
Jobjoris

08/31/2015 at 04:06 | 1 |
How many Maranellos do you think there are? I’ve been there and it was nice. Sant’Agata Bolognese was more epic though.
“Soot” is “roet” over here. And we combine “roet” and “uitstoot” all the time!
